The next generation of essential medicines

H.Hogerzeil, Dr Mahler

“The next generation of essential medicines” consultation marked two historical events at the World Health Organization. In 1981 the WHO established its Action Programme on Essential Medicines, which revolutionized access to medicines across the globe. In addition, Dr. Hans Hogerzeil, who had worked for WHO on essential medicines since 1983, retired at the end of May 2011, marking the completion of a successful career in being a leader of the essential medicines community. Sixty participants from all of the world, who are or have been key players in the essential medicines movement attended this consultative meeting.

Participants came from all WHO regions, other UN organizations, non- government organizations, partner agencies, Geneva missions and included special guests. The aim of this consultation was to reflect on the past thirty years of the Essential Medicines movement and focus on the future of the essential medicine field with the “new generation” of leaders and ideas.
