Types of Country support
Criteria for prioritising technical cooperation work
Due to the finite nature of human and financial resources, WHO must prioritise in its strategy to support countries. Criteria considered for this include:
- The severity of countries' needs
- The level of economic development
- The likelihood of success and sustainable impact on development
- Opportune timing
- Potential cost-effectiveness
- The support to the pharmaceutical sector being provided by other parties
- Political will
- Priority to low-income populations
Types of country support
WHO country support in medicines can be classified into four main types, sometimes used in combination: situation analysis, specific technical support, comprehensive programme support, and intercountry programmes. The first three types involve projects and activities for individual countries, and the latter involves intercountry, subregional, regional, and interregional programmes and activities.
