Mental health, human rights and legislation

WHO provides support to countries in developing and implementing progressive mental health laws that promote and protect the rights of people with mental disorders. Through direct technical assistance to countries, regional and national training workshops, and distance learning programmes, WHO provides technical information and training on international human rights standards related to the rights of people with mental disorders, as well as practical guidance on steps required to assess, develop and implement progressive mental health law. A number of materials and tools have been developed to provide a clear framework for technical assistance and training in this area, including the WHO Resource Book on Mental Health, Human Rights and Legislation and the WHO Checklist on Mental Health Legislation.
