Neglected tropical diseases

A systematic technically driven process for the adoption of additional diseases as NTDs

WHO recognises there are still many tropical, poverty-related diseases that affect the same populations and share many features with the neglected tropical diseases. WHO supports advocacy, awareness and the need to develop appropriate solutions that can also be implemented in low resource settings.

In January 2016, the 138th session of the Executive Board requested the Director-General “through the Neglected Tropical Diseases Strategic and Technical Advisory Group (NTD-STAG) to define a systematic, technically driven process for evaluation and potential inclusion of additional diseases among the “neglected tropical diseases”.

In April 2016, the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Neglected Tropical Diseases made its recommendations.

Dossiers requesting the inclusion of a disease as an additional NTD should be submitted on or before 15 January to allow its timely processing by WHO NTD STAG during its annual meeting held in April.
