Yaws elimination

A recent finding that a single-dose azithromycin is as effective as a single-injection of benzathine penicillin in the treatment of yaws provides a huge possibility to eliminate yaws. This new finding overcomes the limitations of using antibiotic injections in mass treatment. In this context, WHO is convening a technical meeting of experts to review the evidence and to define the way forward for yaws elimination.

Organized in collaboration with the Collaborative International Pesticide Analytical Council (CIPAC) and the Chinese Institute for the Control of AgroChemicals, Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA), the meeting is expected to review the data package provided by Industry for the development of FAO and WHO specifications for pesticides.
The first four days of the meeting (8-11 June 2011) are devoted to the JMPS Closed Meeting in which evaluations and proposed pesticide specifications will be reviewed.
This will be followed by JMPS Open Meeting, jointly held with CIPAC. More than 150 scientists, representatives from national pesticide regulatory authorities, from pesticide quality control laboratories and from the pesticide industry are expected to attend the JMPS Open Meeting.
