Strategic and technical consultation on investment and impact in the control of neglected tropical diseases
Date: 16–17 December 2013
Venue: HQ, Room 405
The meeting will discuss latest evidence on NTD investment and impact as well as provide input for the forthcoming WHO report on NTD control. A proposal to develop the establishment of a Working Group on NTD control and impact will also be discussed. Participants include representatives from Member States, UN Agencies, partners and non-governmental organizations.

9th meeting of the International Commission for the Certification of Dracunculiasis Eradication (ICCDE)
Date: 3–5 December 2013
Venue: WHO HQ, Geneva Room M.505
The commission will examine claims by countries of achieving a dracunculiasis (guinea worm disease) free status and recommend to the Director-General, WHO on whether they can be certified free of Dracunculiasis. So far 192 countries, territories and areas have been certified as dracunculiasis free. This year requests from Cote d’Ivoire, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia and South Africa will be examined.

Workshop on Surveillance and Control of Rabies
Date: 03–14 December 2013
Venue: Dakar, Senegal
The course will provide a practical training on rabies with a special focus on Africa for students and professionals of animal and human public health sectors and emphasize the need of multidisciplinary approach and intersectoral cooperation. More details

Consultative Meeting on Diagnostics for Buruli Ulcer
Date: 21 November 2013

The meeting will discuss status of epidemiology, unmet needs in diagnostics. It will also draft a target profile to develop a strategy on diagnostics for Buruli ulcer and initiate specific projects.

Fifth meeting - International Coordination Group - WHO/Gates Foundation Project on human and dog rabies elimination)
Date: 8–10 October 2013
Venue: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
The meeting will review the progress made, identifying challenges and discussing the fifth year of project implementation.

FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Management (JMPM))
Date: 15–18 October 2013
Venue: WHO Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland
The JMPM is an advisory body to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and WHO for policy development and pesticide management in fulfillment of the International code of conduct on pesticide management. It develops guidance documents to support sound management of pesticides in agriculture and health sectors and supports capacity strengthening of Member States.

5th meeting of the WHO South East Asia Region Kala-azar Regional Technical Advisory Group (RTAG)
Date: 17–19 September 2013
Venue: Paro, Bhutan
Objectives of the meeting include a review of progress and achievements of the Kala-azar Elimination Programme and implementation of recommendations of 4th RTAG meeting as well as assess progress of the National Plan of Action in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal and recommend strategies for additional improvement.

Sixty-third session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe
Date: 16–19 September 2013
Venue: Çeşme Izmir, Turkey
Dengue features prominently on the agenda and a draft resolution on a “Regional Framework for surveillance and control of invasive mosquito vectors and re-emerging vector-borne diseases” will be examined. Delegates from 53 Member States of WHO European Region will also discuss and agree on a range of issues relating to public health in the Region and the management and organization of WHO/Europe.

8th European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health - Control of Neglected Zoonoses using a One Health approach
Date: 10–13 September 2013
Venue: Copenhagen, Denmark
Strategies for control, elimination and eventually eradication have only partly been developed and lack of pilot control programmes make evidence-based recommendations difficult. Using a One Health approach might be the best way forward.

WHO Consultation on LLIN Guidelines – to determine and compare fabric strength of LLINs
Venue: WHO Headquaters, Geneva
Date: 21–23 August 2013
The objective of this meeting is to determine and specify physical strength of netting materials of WHO recommended LLINs, using standard fabric criteria and test methods. LLIN manufacturers have been requested to provide samples of their LLIN products for WHO testing of textile parameters which will be subject to fabric tests in a textile research institution determined by WHO. A summary and outcomes of the study will be reviewed at this Consultation. The goal of this study is to promote development of good quality LLINs and promote the concept of value-for-money in procurement of these essential public health products.

WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme (WHOPES)

Date: 22–30 July 2013
The WHOPES Working Group reviews reports of pesticide product trials and makes recommendations on their suitability for public health use. It also assists the WHOPES technical unit to develop and periodically revise WHOPES guidelines. This year the WG will review 8 products including 3 Indoor Residual Products products, 2 larvicides and 3 long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets.

Development of a district level management training course on neglected tropical diseases
Venue: WHO Headquaters, Geneva

The objective is to develop a strategy and tools for capacity strengthening at district level in order to accelerate scale-up of preventive chemotherapy interventions in some of the populous countries, particularly in WHO’s Africa and South-East Asia Regions.

Vector Control Advisory Group (VCAG)
Venue: WHO Headquaters, Geneva
Date: 10–12 July 2013
A new WHO advisory group jointly established between GMP and NTD on new forms of vector control for malaria and other vector-borne diseases. This will be the first meeting of the group and its objective will be to focus on the finalization of the VCAG operating procedural guidance document and to review few innovative products for vector control.

12th FAO/WHO Joint meeting on Pesticide Specifications (JMPS)
Venue: Kiev, Ukraine
Date: 5–10 June 2013
The meeting will review the data package provided by industry for development of FAO and WHO specifications for pesticides, for their quality control and international trade. This meeting is also organized in collaboration with the Collaborative International Pesticide Analytical Council (CIPAC), the Ministry of Health, Ukraine, National Commission Codex Alimentarius of Ukraine and the respective L. I. Medved’s Institute of Ecohygiene and Toxicology, Kiev, Ukraine.

3rd Technical Review Meeting of the Yemen Schistosomiasis Control Project

Experts will assess project activities which have expanded over the years and which now include control and elimination of schistosomiasis, control of soil-transmitted helminthiases, elimination of trachoma, with school health component.

Presentations on progress towards the interruption of guinea-worm disease transmission and status of the disease's eradication will be made.

Fifth World Congress on Leishmaniasis
Venue: Porto de Galinhas, Pernambuco, Brazil
Date: 13–17 May 2013
Objective: The Congress, being held for the first time in the Americas, provides a forum for in-depth discussions on the latest development in the control of different forms of the disease.

WHO Expert Committee in human African trypanosomiasis Control and Surveillance
Venue: WHO Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland
Date: 22–26 April 2013
Objective: Experts will discuss practical implications for the control and surveillance of human African trypanosomiasis in countries endemic for the disease. The WHO Expert Committee last met in 1995 to discuss the progress made in the control and surveillance tools, the epidemiological understanding of the disease and the training of researchers. Since then, important changes have taken place in the epidemiological situation of the disease and tools used to control the disease.

Informal Core Group Meeting on Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention
Venue: WHO Headquarters, C 202, Geneva, Switzerland
Date: 17–19 April 2013
Objective: Around 45 participants are expected to discuss new tools and evidence and analyze global action plan for LF interventions.

Strategic Meeting on Leishmaniasis control
Venue: Tbilisi, Georgia
Date: 16–18 April 2013
Objective: Leishmaniasis is poorly reported disease in WHO’s European Region. The aim of the meeting is to report on the present situation; share experiences on surveillance and control of Leishmaniasis; review existing practical modalities on dealing with Leishmaniasis; identify problems encountered in the participating countries and outline a strategic framework for Leishmaniasis control in the Balkan, South Caucasian and Central Asian countries as well as in Eastern Europe.

17th Review Meeting of National Dracunculiasis Eradication Programmes
Venue: Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
Date: 09–12 April 2013
Objective: Discussions will focus on reviewing progress and challenges remaining in the four remaining countries and consolidate achievements in formerly endemic areas through surveillance and awareness. Country specific plans of action for 2013 will also be discussed.

4th Technical Review Meeting of Preventive Chemotherapy data
Venue: Geneva, Switzerland
Date: 22 February 2013
The meeting will discuss data management for the monitoring and evaluation of preventive chemotherapy in order to update data estimates; foster exchange of preventive chemotherapy and monitoring and evaluation strengthening tools and practicers between WHO Regions and partners; and, quantify training resources needs for 2013.

4th Meeting of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group’s (STAG). Global Working Group on Monitoring & Evaluation
Venue: Geneva, Switzerland
Date: 20–21 February 2013
The objective is to determine the priority activities for the monitoring and evaluation of national NTD control programmes; monitoring of disease-specific indicators and measuring of enhanced outcomes and impact. A working document will be prepared for the annual STAG meeting scheduled for 2013.

4th Meeting of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group’s Working Group on Monitoring of drug efficacy
Venue: Geneva, Switzerland
Date: 18–19 February 2013
Experts convene to prepare a detailed report on the Working Group’s findings on anthelminthic drugs to be submitted to the annual STAG meeting scheduled for April 2013.
