Meeting of the WHO Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group (NUGAG)
Subgroup on Nutrition in the Life Course and Undernutrition: Area Acute Malnutrition
The meeting from 14 to 16 March 2011 will be the 2nd meeting for the Subgroup on Nutrition in the Life Course and Undernutrition: Area Acute Malnutrition.
The main objectives of this meeting are:
Severe acute malnutrition (SAM):
- Present "The effectiveness of interventions to treat severely malnourished children: a systematic review" including:
- Antibiotic treatment in children with SAM
- Management of dehydration without shock due to diarrhoea in children with SAM
- Management of shock with IV fluids in children with SAM
- Feeding inpatient children with SAM and diarrhoea
- Feeding the severely malnourished infants less than 6 months of age
- Present the GRADE Evidence profiles for the management of SAM and discuss findings.
- Discuss on-going systematic reviews in the management of SAM covering areas identified by the NUGAG in the 1st NUGAG meeting and not covered by the systematic review presented.
- Define implications for research in the areas discussed.
Moderate acute malnutrition (MAM):
- Present and discuss the draft specifications for foods for moderately malnourished children.
- Present and discuss the systematic reviews on:
- Cash transfer or other non-food based interventions for children with MAM
- Population vs. individual targeting of nutritional programmes for children with MAM
- Effectiveness and safety of a food supplement formulated along the proposed technical specifications for children with MAM
- Present the GRADE Evidence profiles for the management of MAM and discuss findings.
- Discuss protocols for remaining systematic reviews.
- Define implications for research in the areas discussed.
