Third Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group (NUGAG) meeting of the Subgroup of Nutrition in the Life Course and Undernutrition - Area Acute Malnutrition

WHO is convening a Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group NUGAG meeting for the Nutrition in the Life Course and Undernutrition Subgroup in WHO/HQ, Geneva from 01 to 03 February 2012 to finalize the recommendations on severe acute malnutrition.
The main objectives of the third NUGAG meeting on acute malnutrition are to:
- Discuss the evidence-informed recommendations for global guidelines on the management of severe acute malnutrition, specifically on :
- The care of children with diarrhoea in community-based management of severe acute malnutrition
- The care of children with diarrhoea in community-based management of severe acute malnutrition
- The use of intravenous blood and/or plasma infusions in severe dehydration and shock
- Vitamin A supplementation in the treatment of children with severe malnutrition
- The care of HIV-infected children with severe acute malnutrition
- Admission and discharge criteria for the management of severe acute malnutrition in infants <6 months
- Inpatient treatment of severe acute malnutrition in infants aged <6 months
- Fluid management of children with dehydration without shock and severe malnutrition
- Feeding of children with severe malnutrition and persistent diarrhoea
- Antibiotic treatment in children with severe acute malnutrition
- Assessing outcomes of children with oedema treated as outpatients
- Screening for acute malnutrition in children >6 months of age
- Discharge criteria for acute malnutrition in children >6 months of age
- Determine the strength of these recommendations, considering the balance of evidence for benefits and harms, and taking into account costs, values and preferences.
- Define implications for research in the areas discussed.
- Agree on a ‘review by’ date for the guideline validity, considering the ongoing research and controversies.
- Discuss the decision-making process for country adaptation and implementation of global guidelines into national public health programmes.
