Iodine and health : eliminating iodine deficiency disorders safely through salt iodization

Overview
Iodine deficiency disorders are both easy and inexpensive to prevent, yet they continue to be a significant publich health problem in 118 countries. Despite the endorsement of universal salt iodization numerous international forums as an effective means of preventing these disorders, queries are still made about the safety of providing iodized salt to non-deficient populations. In response to concerns expressed, and to facilitate decision-making by responsible authorities, this statement summarizes the cumulative evidence in this regard.
