Dr Lorenzo Botto works at the interface between epidemiology and clinical medicine, with special emphasis on global prevention and public health assessment of birth defects. He is trained in pediatrics, medical genetics, and epidemiology. After over a decade at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (first as EIS officer, then on staff in the Birth Defects branch), he is now Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah, and chair of the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Surveillance and Research (ICBDSR), an international network dedicated to birth defects surveillance and research.

Dr Pierpaolo Mastroiacovo is Professor of Pediatrics, and formerly Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Catholic University of Rome. At present he is Director of the Alessandra Lisi International Centre on Birth Defects and Prematurity and Director of the Centre of the ICBDSR. His main research field is the epidemiology of birth defects, and his current main interest is to promote preconception health in Italy.
