Estimating appropriate levels of vitamins and minerals for food fortification programmes: A WHO modeling software program

In order to facilitate use of methodology described in the 2006 WHO/FAO Guidelines on Food Fortification with Micronutrients for determining the appropriate level of micronutrients to add to a food vehicle, WHO is working in collaboration with the University of Hawaii, Iowa State University, and the USDA ARS Western Human Nutrition Research Center to develop a software tool to aid public health managers in calculating the optimal level of additional micronutrients in a user-friendly way, using locally available data. The Department of Nutrition for Health and Development (NHD) will convene a meeting to present a draft the WHO software modeling program and solicit feedback from potential users.
The objectives of the meeting are:
- To present the WHO software program to estimate the level of food fortification with micronutrients
- To understand the synergies of this software tool with existing USAID Formulator program
- To solicit feedback on the software program from potential users
