As we are issuing this GOHNET, the 64th World Health Assembly is underway to endorse a resolution on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) following a large number of informal and formal meetings in preparation of the United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of NCDs to be held in September 2011 in New York. The global burden of non-communicable diseases continues to grow, in particular, in low- and middle-income countries and action will need to follow after New York. We are working to ensure that the high-level meeting will recognize the occupational determinants of NCDs and the opportunities provided in the workplace as a setting for effective interventions to prevent and control NCDS. You will find a link to the recent Global Status Report on NCDs, an article by Dr Ivanov that discusses this issues, as well as good practice examples from healthy workplace initiatives, the scaling up of occupational health services, meeting reports, and new publications.
