The 2nd Asian Conference of Oral Health Promotion for School Children took place in Ayutthaya, Thailand from February 21st - 23rd 2003. The purpose of the conference was to discover how to protect and promote the health of school aged children, who take responsibility for the next generation. Participants from South East Asia (SEARO) and Western Pacific (WPRO) regions discussed how to share experiences related to continuous implementation of school oral health programmes within the framework of the WHO Global School Health Initiative.

“Ayutthaya Declaration”

Oral health is an integral part of general health and essential for quality of life for children. In light of the current oral disease pattern in Asia, we call upon national authorities in health and education to ensure the implementation of systematic school health programmes for promoting oral health and general health in children, based on an approach of the World Health Organization’s Health Promoting Schools Initiative. Such programmes should focus on promotion of health and include oral health care services according to the socio-cultural conditions of the country. Participants of the 2 nd Asian Conference of Oral Health Promotion for School Children reaffirm the declaration of the 1 st Conference in Tokyo in terms of regular exchange of information with the aim of improving the oral health status of school children.

Those of us engaged in school dental health activities have assembled for the first time in the Asia Region at a conference devoted to oral health promotion. It stands as a forum report, discuss, and advance mutual understanding of oral health for school children in the countries and regions represented here today. That we have been able to strengthen our awareness that these activities were developed and rooted in the history, society, culture of each country and region is indeed significant. We hereby declare under the name of all present that we shall hold this conference on a regular basis aiming to exchange information, build a cooperative system, improve oral health among children, and contribute to the well-being of mankind and the development of each country and region based on mutual cooperation.
