Patient safety

Risk reduction in radiotherapy

In response to increasing reports of harm to patients caused by radiotherapy worldwide, the WHO World Alliance for Patient Safety has worked to address this topic through:

  • Setting up of an expert working group who oversaw the review of evidence and reached consensus to map the process of radiotherapy.
  • The profile isolates where in this process harm occurs and in addition identifies a set of standardised safety interventions that could reduce harm to patients receiving radiotherapy.

This work is led by Professor Michael Barton at South Western Sydney Area Health Service in Australia.
