WHO/SEAR Workshop on Patient Safety in Healthcare

12-14 July 2006

The Regional Workshop on Patient Safety took place in New Delhi, India and brought together about 50 participants from SEAR Members States to share experiences on patient safety. The workshop was the first step towards the development of a regional strategic framework on Patient Safety in Health Care Institutions. The main objectives were to:

  • raise awareness about the magnitude of the problem of adverse events among Member States in the Region;
  • enhance understanding of important concepts in patient safety, particularly the need for a systems approach;
  • exchange information about patient safety initiatives underway within SEAR Member States and through the work of the World Alliance for Patient Safety;
  • identify and address issues related to the implementation of patient safety in the following four areas: health care-associated (nosocomial) infection, role of nurses and midwives, patient and consumer involvement, and the rational use of medicines and injections.
