Second Technical Working Group Meeting - "Safe Surgery Saves Lives"

The second Technical Working Group Meeting took place at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, 9-11 July 2007. The four working groups "Safe Surgical Teams", "Safe Anaesthesia", "Prevention of Surgical Infections" and "Measurement":

  • reviewed the "Surgical Checklist" in its entirety and identified strategies for and barriers to implementation;
  • presented and discussed the content of the Technical Report Papers supporting the suggested items on the checklist;
  • finalized the technical papers of each working group with the aim of having a finished product by the end of July 2007; and
  • finalized the initiation of the pilot testing process.

The First Technical Working Group Meeting, 18-20 April, 2007 in London, UK, concluded with a draft outline of a "Surgical Checklist", which has the aim to ensure basic Patient Safety related checks being performed before the operation starts, during the operation and post-surgery.
