WHO Director-General hears first hand about need for patient safety

22 June 2007

Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization, was in London on 22 June 2007 as the joint guest of Sir Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Health, the Wellcome Trust, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

The World Alliance for Patient Safety hosted a working lunch for Dr Chan where she was informed about the programmes and activities of the Alliance. Key participants at the lunch included Mrs. Margaret Murphy, a "Patients for Patient Safety" Champion, and Professor Didier Pittet, external lead of the first Global Patient Safety Challenge "Clean Care is Safer Care", who had the opportunity to brief Dr Chan on specific Alliance programmes.
