EMRO Workshop: Safe Surgery Saves Lives

22-23 June 2009
Amman, Jordan

Regional workshops are a critical component of the Second Global Patient Safety Challenge, "Safe Surgery Saves Lives", in terms of awareness raising, dissemination of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and the opportunity they provide for sharing and conveying of technical information.

More than eighty participants attended the Eastern Mediterranean region workshop on 22-23 June 2009, representing 20 Eastern Mediterranean countries (Afghanistan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen).

The two-day workshop heard key-note presentation by the Jordanian Minister of Health, the EMRO Regional Director Dr Hussein A. Geizairy and the Lead of the Second Global Patient Safety Challenge, Professor Atul Gawande. The workshop focused on current in-country experiences, use of the WHO Checklist and tools and how it might be possible to build on the strengths of these.

During a special ceremony GCC Director Dr Tawfik Khoja distributed an emblem to speakers and some participants recognizing their role in the Safe Surgery Saves Lives initiative within EMRO.

Recommendations on national actions to take following the workshop were debated during working group sessions which reviewed the mechanisms for disseminating and implementing the WHO Checklist, targeting decision and policy-makers from ministries of health and hospitals, as well as the involvement of the civil society and the supportive role of WHO.
