Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) and Clinical Engineering Workshop
Ministry of Social Protection, PAHO/WHO, ACCE
Day 2 agenda
Tuesday, 12 July 2005
Concurrent session for directors and administrators
| Time | Min | Section/Title | Description | Speakers |
| 8:00am | 60 | Healthcare Technology Policy (HTP) Impact Analysis | The contribution of health technology policy and health technology management (HTM) activities in providing cost benefits, improved quality of care, and improved patient outcomes, is demonstrated through several relevant case studies from other countries. The WHO Essential Health Technology Package (EHTP) concept is introduced as health technology planning and management tool. | Tom Judd |
| 9:00am | 30 | HTP Case Studies | The World Health Organization has developed guidelines for a National Health Devices Policy that includes issues to be considered. Model policies will be presented along with several case studies of how they have been applied. | Tom Judd |
| 9:30am | 30 | Break | ||
| 10:00am | 45 | Technology Planning and Assessment – Case Studies | Technology assessment principles that can impact on planning at the macro level (national and regional) and micro level (Hospital, Clinic) will be reviewed. Case studies will highlight these principles. | Yadin David |
| 10:45am | 45 | Technology Planning and Procurement - Case Studies | A review of how planning and procurement sets up effective management of medical devices. In each phase of the process we will identify the key decisions, the information required for decision-making, and the impact of the decision on the process, and illustrate this information using several case studies. Refurbished medical equipment. | Petr Kresta |
| 11:30am | 30 | Colombia Presentations | Presentations by country representatives on the status of healthcare, technology management, and clinical engineering in Colombia. | TBD |
| 12:00pm | 60 | Lunch | ||
| 1:00pm | 30 | An Integrated Safety Program | Philosophy and concepts for current safety issues & safety education; IOM report; Patient safety efforts by JCAHO and other organizations; Failure mode analysis systems approach to medical device safety: environment, facility, user, patient, maintainer, manufacturer. Medical device incidents, investigation and prevention. Reuse of disposables | Frank Painter |
| 1:30pm | 30 | Quality Improvement (QI) | Quality of care in healthcare delivery is measured and improved through development of appropriate QI infrastructure - “Quality Culture” and tools. Care QI tools include carefully selected quality indicators, use of evidence-based medicine to drive care, and the provision of data feedback to practitioners on effectiveness. Similarly, HTM quality can be seen through key HTM quality indicators, devices quality assurance and QI programs, and regulatory compliance programs. | Tom Judd |
| 2:00pm | 30 | Electromagnetic Compatibility | Malfunctions and potential patient injuries have been induced on medical devices via electromagnetic interference from electromagnetic fields emitted by wireless telecommunication systems. These incidents were reported to regulatory agencies and have published on literatures. The risk from EMI is low but needs minimization to reduce these risks. | Kok-Swang Tan |
