Butare University Teaching Hospital, Rwanda is partnering with Imperial College Healthcare Trust, England.

Butare University Teaching Hospital is an urban referral hospital in Southern Rwanda with four main missions: Services to the Community, Medical Education, Research and Supervision of district and countrywide hospitals. Its main activities include surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology and obstetrics, dentistry and ophthalmology. The hospital has a total of 500 beds and its staff, including 32 specialist doctors and 255 nurses, treat 7 000 inpatients and 49 200 outpatients annually from their 2 000 000 strong catchment area.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK. It comprises of 5 hospitals (Charing Cross, Hammersmith, Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea, St. Mary’s and Western Eye Hospitals). The Trust employs around 10 000 people and treats over 1 million patients annually. It was the country’s first Academic Health Science Centre and works in partnership with Imperial College London, thus providing a strong focus on research and innovation which is subsequently translated into clinical practice.
