PROHIBIT - Prevention of Hospital Infections by Intervention & Training

Infection control activities in European hospitals

A Pan-European survey on organisation and measures of infection control (IC) was undertaken between September 2011 and March 2012. An online questionnaire in 16 languages was sent to European IC national focal points. 24 of the 34 invited countries (68%) submitted data, representing 308 hospitals. The survey provided a large dataset, still under analysis, concerning IC structures and the prevention of surgical site infections (SSI), bloodstream infections (BSI), urinary tract infections, low respiratory tract infections, and Clostridium difficile. In addition, it allowed the identification of elements of structure and services (on a national level and a hospital level), to predict the use of specific IC measures in European hospitals.
