In January 2007, Sir Liam Donaldson, Chair of the World Alliance for Patient Safety, interviewed Professor Atul Gawande who is a leading international expert on surgery and playing a major role in the work of the World Alliance for Patient Safety.

About Atul Gawande

Dr Atul Gawande is leading the 2nd Global Patient Safety Challenge Safe Surgery Saves Lives.

Dr Gawande is the Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Harvard University and Assistant Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School General and Endocrine Surgeon, Brigham and Women's Hospital. He has an internationally recognized and wide-ranging track record of academic leadership in patient safety with a specific focus on error in surgery, particularly in establishing its frequency and seriousness and revealing underlying mechanisms. Dr Gawande has produced the seminal work in the field Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science. New York: Metropolitan Books; 2002. This has been published in 17 languages and more than 100 countries. Dr Gawande has published a number of other leading research studies.
