UK requires patient safety competencies of its doctors in training

Sir Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer for England and the UK Government's Chief Medical Adviser has launched for consultation a groundbreaking curriculum document for postgraduate medical education.

For the first time, all doctors in their first two years of postgraduate education and training will be required to develop competencies not just in clinical care but in patient safety, clinical governance and team working. Trainees will be assessed in relation to these competencies in judging their suitability for career progression.
