The first edition of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist has been evaluated to identify potential problems with implementation and acceptance and to confirm that its use can actually improve surgical safety. Evaluation is underway in operating rooms in the six WHO Regions:

Results of pilot study now out

Hospitals in eight cities around the globe have successfully demonstrated that the use of a simple surgical checklist, developed by WHO, during major operations can lower the incidence of surgery-related deaths and complications by one third

Analysis shows that the rate of major complications following surgery fell from 11% in the baseline period to 7% after introduction of the checklist, a reduction of one third. Inpatient deaths following major operations fell by more than 40% (from 1.5% to 0.8%).

Successful implementation of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist—and the potential to improve outcomes for patients around the world—will require adapting the Checklist to local routines and expectations. This will not be possible without sincere commitment of hospital administrators and policy-makers in the highest echelons of professional organizations and ministries of health.
