Work with Parliamentarians

Over the years PMNCH has worked closely with groups of parliamentarians around the world to advocate for improved reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) at the national level. PMNCH also works with PMNCH member, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), supporting the organization in its efforts to facilitate discussions to raise awareness among parliamentarians globally, discussing the importance of investing in RMNCH and the role of parliamentarians in the process.

• Parliament of Uganda and the Inter-Parliamentary Union meet to address women's and children's health
  9-10 DECEMBER 2011 | KAMPALA - Approximately 80 parliamentarians gathered in a two day meeting organized by the Parliament of Uganda and the Inter-Parliamentary Union to discuss the role of parliaments in improving reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health in Uganda.

• Kenyan Parliamentarians meet in Nairobi to address women's and children's health
  5-6 DECEMBER 2011 | NAIROBI, KENYA - Kenyan Parliamentarians met over two days to discuss their role in improving the stagnating mortality and morbidity rates for women and children.

• Commonwealth parliamentarians discuss their role in improving women’s and children’s health
  29 NOVEMBER – 2 DECEMBER 2011 | LONDON UK - Over 60 parliamentarians from 40 countries participated in a session on the role of parliaments in keeping the promises on women’s and children’s health - this at the International Parliamentary Conference on the Millennium Development Goals, hosted by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK (CPA UK).
• 125th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union
  18 OCTOBER 2011 | BERN - Women’s and children’s health was a leading item on the agenda of the 125th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Bern, Switzerland.

• 124th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union
  17 APRIL 2011 | PANAMA CITY - The Every Woman Every Child (EWEC) campaign, the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) jointly convened a roundtable discussion; Parliamentarians Taking the Lead on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health on the occasion of the 124th Assembly of the IPU held in Panama City.

• Taking the lead: Parliamentarians engage with maternal, newborn and child health
  A joint meeting held with the Countdown to 2015 Maternal, Newborn & Child Survival Initiative and the IPU. Since then, follow-up sessions have been held at the regular IPU Assemblies twice each year . A joint publication between PMNCH and the IPU was published for a special meeting of Female Speakers of Parliament in Bern in 2010: Taking the lead: Parliamentarians engage with maternal, newborn and child health

• The role of parliamentarians in achieving MDGs 4 & 5
  29 MARCH 2010 | BANGKOK, THAILAND – Hundreds of Parliamentarians and decision-makers at the 122nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly were urged to follow the examples of Thailand and Canada – where maternal, newborn and child health have been set as priorities

• Canadian parliamentary breakfast briefing
  3 DECEMBER 2009 | OTTAWA - At a special breakfast briefing co-hosted by PMNCH and the FIGO/Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians of Canada (SOGC) on Canada’s Parliament Hill, sponsored by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Canada Group, and held in conjunction with the PMNCH Board meeting, Canadian Parliamentarians and Senators promised to urge the Canadian government to make maternal, newborn and child (MNC) survival a priority at the G8 and G20 meetings hosted by Canada in June 2010.

• Parliamentarians visit healthcare facilities
  7 APRIL 2009 | ADDIS ABABA - Ethiopia, host of the 120th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, is one of the 68 priority countries of the Countdown to 2015 Initiative. These 68 countries jointly suffer 97% of the global burden of maternal, newborn and child mortality.

• Italian women Parliamentarians commit to maternal, newborn & child health
  23 JANUARY 2009 | GENEVA - In conjunction with the Italian non-governmental organization, Osservatorio Nazionale sulla salute de la Donna (O.N.Da), and the WHO Department of Reproductive Health and Research (WHO/RHR), PMNCH organized a meeting of women parliamentarians on sexual and reproductive health — critical issues in maternal, newborn & child health. The aim of the meeting was to assess the current status of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in the world, with a focus on Italy, and map the Parliamentarians' actions in support of MNCH ahead of the G8 meeting, to be held in La Maddalena in July 2009.

• Report: Opportunities for Africa's newborns
  NOVEMBER 2006 - A group of PMNCH members led by Saving Newborn Lives/ Save the Children, published jointly with PMNCH the report: Opportunities for Africa’s Newborns. The launch took place at the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), with PAP President, the Honorable Gertrude Mongella, heading the PAP participation and subsequently becoming one of PMNCH’s Champions in Africa.
