28-30 April 2010 | Dhaka, Bangladesh – Two major PMNCH events took place at the end of April:

  • PMNCH NGO member, BRAC hosted the 8th PMNCH Board Meeting;
  • "Mothers and Babies Speak" : A high level public event took place on the morning of 28 April, jointly organized by BRAC, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of Bangladesh and the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health. The event was followed by field trips to the urban slums of Dhaka.

28 April 2010 | Dhaka, Bangladesh – Dr. A. F. M. Ruhal Haque, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, People’ s Republic of Bangladesh presided over the event, with Dr Julian Schweitzer (PMNCH Board Chair) and Dr Flavia Bustreo (PMNCH Director) as special guests.

The focus of the event was on innovations for maternal, newborn & child health in Bangladesh and included presentations on innovative private-public partnerships by Dr Afsana (BRAC) and Anir Chowdhury, Policy Advisor from the Prime Minister's Office. Presentations were followed by a discussion on international developments regarding maternal, newborn and child health, focusing on the new Joint Action Plan for health women and health children led by the UN Secretary General and the contribution of Bangladesh to these international efforts.

Board Members were invited to join one of several field trips to the urban slums of Dhaka to visit the Manoshi project, a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funded project implemented by BRAC.

29-30 April 2010 - Among other decisions, the PMNCH decided to accept the task of facilitating the development of the Joint Action Plan, which it sees as an excellent opportunity to galvanize increased political and financial commitments to drive implementation for MNCH.

PMNCH Board elected Professor Vinod Paul, of All India Institute of Medical Sciences as co-Chair for the next two years.

This was the last Board Meeting Chaired by Dr Julian Schweitzer. He welcomed incoming Chair Julio Frenk, Dean of Harvard, who will chair PMNCH's 9th Board Meeting in Delhi (India) in November 2010.

The PMNCH Board Meeting was hosted by its NGO member of long-standing on the Board, BRAC, at the BRAC Center in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
