Partners' Forum 2007

17-20 April 2007 | Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Working Group: Advocacy

A Chair and Co-Chair of the Advocacy Working Group were elected:

  • Chair: Arletty Pinel, UNFPA
  • Co-Chair: Doyin Oluwole, Academy for Educational Development

The central work of the Advocacy Working Group is to generate greater momentum for achieving MDGs 4 & 5 by increasing political commitment to maternal, newborn and child health. To do this, the group will seek to build on the strengths and efforts of various partners at global, regional, national and local levels. In the first instance, the group agreed to develop a two-year workplan, which would be circulated in June and agreed by July.

The Advocacy Working Group meeting featured three presentations from advocacy, research and knowledge-management experts:

Ann Pettifor, executive director of Advocacy International, inspired the group about what can be achieved with high-level, coordinated advocacy, based on lessons learned during the highly successful Jubilee 2000 campaign for debt relief.

Elizabeth Ransom and Rachel Grellier of Options Consultancy outlined the advocacy research and assessment plans to support the roll-out of the Global Business Plan;

Karin Santi and Ela Chirileanu, UNDP, introduced the group to the Communities of Practice electronic network model. This model will be piloted among Advocacy Working Group members this summer to enhance internal communications and information sharing within The Partnership.
