Mission statement

The Liya Kebede Foundation (LKF) is a US501c3 non-profit operating foundation based that supports leading organizations working to reduce maternal and newborn deaths in Africa. LKF believes that every woman deserves the best opportunity for safe motherhood. To that end, we champion innovative approaches to:

  • Improve access to safe birth services for underserved women
  • Expand community education about best practices in reproductive, maternal & newborn health.

We also engage in advocacy to increase commitments and resources from diverse supporters in support of better maternal health.

To date LKF has raised public awareness in the US and Europe through extensive media outreach in major print, web and television outlets. We've engaged new supporters from across the fashion, design and entertainment industry as well as the African business and diaspora communities. Through small grants in Ethiopia LKF has targeted gaps in service coverage to reach vulnerable communities with basic and emergency obstetric services.
