Deliver Now for Women + Children
2007 New York launch
Wednesday 26 September 2007
The Deliver Now drive was launched in Bryant Park, in central New York city with an event, hosted by TV personality Ricki Lake, with the participation of key speakers including the First lady of Zambia, Maureen Mwanawasa and Liya Kebede, Ethiopian model and WHO Goodwill Ambassador and an hour-long concert with Grammy-winning artist, Chaka Khan. The programme included the showing of a new "Balloons" public service announcement (PSA) and culminated in a call to action to endorse "The Global Promise to Deliver Now for Women and Children" via mobile texting, internet and "thumbprint" signatures on a giant banner wall. "Deliver Now" T-shirts, stickers, buttons, postcards, balloons and washable tattoos were distributed among the participants.
Through large video screens, the main rally was echoed across other locations in New York including the Bronx, which holds the highest maternal mortality in the United States. Ambassadors interacted with public, handing out postcards and other "Deliver Now" materials including some 2000 free phone calling cards with recorded audio PSAs about the campaign.
