The XVIII conference of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) - turned much focus and attention on the issue of Maternal mortality and the need for professional partnerships to work together to save maternal, newborn & child lives.

World Report on Women

The World Report on Women s Health 2006: Women’s Right to Health and the Millennium Development Goals: Promoting Partnerships to Improve Access was released by the International Journal of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. Unsafe abortion, fistula, violence against women, and the tragic increase in HIV in young women are a few of the 22 areas of concern detailed in the Report. In-coming FIGO president, Dr Dorothy stressed coordinated action in order to meet the global goal to reduce maternal mortality.

Partnership at FIGO

The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH) was prominent at the FIGO conference - including a special award recognizing the work of Ann Tinker, an active member of the PMNCH interim Steering Committee (iSC), for her lifelong work and in particular, heading the Saving Newborn Lives initiative.

Throughout the conference, Partnership members voiced the need for collaboration to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and presented at multiple FIGO sessions.

ICM-FIGO Joint Statement

At the FIGO XVIII World Congress, the International Confederation of Midwives and the FIGO launched a new Joint Statement, as the next step in al campaign to combat post-partum haemorrhage (blood loss during childbirth), one of the most frequent causes of maternal death worldwide.
