UN Side-events to Africa's Development Needs

Several "Interactive Thematic Dialogues" took place as Side-events to the UN High-level Meeting held on 22 September 2008 at the United Nations' (UN) headquarters in New York. Three key side meetings related directly to maternal, newborn and child health:

The Africa Women's Forum

Sponsors: UNIFEM, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNAIDS, UNV, ECA, ITC, UNCTAD/WTO, OSAA, Co-Hosts: Rwanda, Iceland, African Union, European Commission

The side-event examined three themes : Accountability to commitments made regarding gender equality and women’s rights in Africa; Measures to address the needs of the poor most marginalized and excluded women; Roles of various stakeholders in promoting women leadership and engendering local development plans.

The social development challenge in Africa: Better health for Africa

The side-event focussed on:

  • Health for all in Africa: Combating AIDs, TB, malaria, maternal and infant mortality
  • Water and sanitation
The MDG Africa Steering Group and the Gleneagles Scenario Approach to Scaling Up ODA

Presentations on experiences in developing a “Gleneagles” scenario to mobilize and deliver more effective, predictable and coordinated scaled-up resources for accelerated progress toward the MDGs.
