The UN General Assembly focussed on many world issues, conflicts, environmental issues, the economy and the food crisis. However, maternal, newborn and child health was also raised as an important issue by several key countries and was mentioned in the opening speech by the Secretary-General of the UN, Ban Ki-Moon.

The opening session of the Assembly preceded a special UN High-level meeting focussing on the internationally-agreed goals to reduce poverty - the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

With an eye to achieving these goals, a number of Presidents noted their work and the commitment to achieving MDGs 4 & 5-- to reduce child and maternal mortality by the year 2015.

Below, please find some of these president's speeches at the General Assembly which touched on MDGs 4 & 5, starting with that of the UN Secretary-General.
