CONFERENCE: African Health Worker Migration to Europe: Problems, Prospects, Policies, 4-7 June 2009

4-7 JUNE 2009 LEIPZIG

Event 3rd European Conference on African Studies
Organizer: European network AEGIS
Publication date: 2009
Language: English

Overview

The rapid increase in the number of African workers entering the health professions, recruited to European and other OECD markets, and working overseas, has attracted increased scholarly and policy-maker attention over the past decade. Much research remains to be done, however, on the effects of these migration patterns on home country health outcomes, on the health workers' training and professional advancement, patterns of residence and mobility, quality of integration into receiving countries, and related issues.

This panel analyses the history of African health worker migration to Europe; the role of international migrant workers’ networks in facilitating their workplace adaptation and the regulation of the health sector’s global labour market; the mechanisms and institutional resources of these networks, especially their opportunities and limitations as mediators within the global labour market; and policy options and current best practices that harmonize European and African health outcomes.
