Global launch of PMNCH

New York
12 September 2005

The world’s leading advocates for women and children joined forces on September 12 2005, launching The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health at a high-profile event at UNICEF House in New York.

Political leaders, NGOs, professional associations, multilateral agencies and donors gathered together in a round-table discussion to vow urgent support to country-led efforts to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5.

A key theme of the discussion was the importance of strengthening national health systems, including retraining health workers, revising pay scales, and stemming the “brain drain” of skilled personnel to developed countries. Investment into Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and the roll of private-public partnerships were also profiled in the discussion.

The roundtable discussion was followed by statements of commitment by members of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health, including health professional associations, NGOs, donor agencies, multilaterals and national governments
