Introduction: G8 watch 2010
Meeting of the Group of Eight (G 8 ): 25 June 2010 , Muskoka, Ontario, Canada
Meeting of the Group of 20 (G 20): 26 June 2010, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
The Group of Eight (G8) brings together the world’s major advanced economies—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Canada assumed the 2010 G8 Presidency in early 2010 and hosted this year’s G8 summit on June 25 in Canada’s Muskoka region in Ontario. The G 20 meets in nearby Toronto, Ontario on 26 June 2010.
The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health and its members has been involved in talking to leaders from G8 countries to bring to their attention the unnecessary maternal, newborns and child deaths worldwide. In 2008, a Call to Action for MNCH was led by The Partnership. In 2009, leaders made a promise to address maternal, newborn, child and reproductive health. Through 2009 and 2010, The Partnership and its members have continued to further highlight the MNCH issues with G8 country leaders as well as the United Nations efforts and beyond. In January 2010, the Canadian government announced that it would lead a maternal, newborn and child Initiative at the G8 in June 2010 and call on other governments to follow its lead. In this section of the PMNCH website, we will highlight actions of the PMNCH and its members regarding MNCH and the G8. Although not exhaustive, we trace the key news of the Canadian G8 Initiative, actions and campaigns of our members, and include links to some of the clippings and media coverage regarding MNCH and the G8.
In January, the host of the 2010 meeting, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, announced his initiative on maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH). The G8 Communique, released on 26 June 2010, outlines the details of this MNCH initiative. Highlights from the Communique can be found on the G8 Communique, found on the right hand link, as well as Links to the following information on G8 activities of the PMNCH, members and the leaders:
