Launching of a Global Campaign for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health

Women + Children Now

WOMEN + CHILDREN NOW (W+C N) (formerly known as The Global Business Plan - GBP) is a new initiative to get back on track Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5. Women and Children Now, led by the Primer Minister of Norway and developed under The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, will be launched in New York on 26 September 2007.

The objective of WOMEN + CHILDREN NOW is to start a global campaign which will result in increased political action and resources for maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH).

A sequence of key events geared to reach out to political leaders, private sector and the media will take place in New York on the 26 September, including:

  • Launch of Women + Children Now by Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg during the plenary session at the Clinton Global Initiative. There will be announcements of the commitments to Women + Children Now by representatives from the corporate sector.
  • Public rally in Bryant Park, on 42nd St, to mark the global launch of the campaign for MNCH, together with other media activities to promote MNCH & W+CN during the week rest of the week.
  • UN Event, during the UN General Assembly to promote unified UN and donor action on MDGs 4 & 5.

Women + Children Now to get back on track progress MDGs 4 and 5 is closely coordinated with other international initiatives, such as the International Health Partnership (IHP), spearheaded by UK's Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The IHP will be launched in London on September 5.
