Human Rights Watch new publication on accountability for maternal health care in South Africa
NOVEMBER 2011 - Human Rights Watch recently released a report "Stop Making Excuses: Accountability for Maternal Health Care in South Africa".
The report documents maternity care in Eastern Cape Province, arguing that women and their newborns are at high risk of death or injury due to shortcomings in the tools used by health authorities to identify and correct health system failures that contribute to poor maternal health. The Eastern Cape is reported to have some of the worst health indicators in South Africa, including high infant, child, and maternal mortality rates.
