High-Level meeting of the GA on the Prevention and Control of NCDs

Date: 19-20 SEPTEMBER 2011
Venue: UN Headquarters

The General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/65/238, decided that a high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases shall be held on 19 and 20 September 2011 in New York. The event shall address the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases worldwide, with a particular focus on developmental and other challenges and social and economic impacts, particularly for developing countries. The resolution also requests the President of the General Assembly to organize an informal interactive hearing, which was held on 16 June 2011, with non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, the private sector and academia to provide an input to the preparatory process for the high-level meeting. This is only the second time in the history of the United Nations that the General Assembly will meet with the participation of Heads of State and Government on an emerging health issue with a major socio-economic impact. Countries are expected to adopt a concise action-oriented Outcome document that will shape the international agenda for generations to come.
