The Lancet: Engaging the health community in global economic reform

20 MARCH 2009 | LONDON

20 MARCH 2009 LONDON - 20 March 2009- The G20 London summit in April will see political leaders from just 19 countries and the European Union seek agreement on a response to the current economic crisis. The summit's theme of "stability, growth, jobs" suggests a broad agenda-but is it broad enough? Notable by their general absence are the issues of the rising poverty, the hunger and stress resulting from the crisis, and the threat to public resources for health services and education, particularly among those developing countries not represented in the G20. These impacts threaten the health of individuals and whole societies, and their effects will last for generations.
