African Union Heads of State Summit and CARMMA High-Level Event

21-28 JANUARY 2013 | ADDIS ABABA - The theme of the Africa Union's 2013 Summit is “Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance”. H.E. Dr. Nkoszana Dlamini-Zuma will preside as the newly elected and first female Chairperson of the AU Commission.
Ahead of the Summit, there will be several events highlighting reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health at and around the Summit:
- During the Summit, the AU Commission, Africa Development Bank, UNFPA and other partners are organizing a Special Event on The Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA) and its progress in advancing women’s and children’s health in Africa.
- The AU Member States also share good practices and opportunities to further advance maternal health and reduce maternal and child mortality in Africa.
- There will also be a dialogue session held during the Summit by the YWCA in partnership with UN Women, UNFPA, IPPF, ActionAid, AIDS in Action and others, which will bring 40 young women to present an intergenerational perspective to the meeting as well as highlight issues of health and violence against women.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, as Co-Chairman of the United Nations Commission on Life-Saving Commodities for Women and Children and spearheading the Saving One Million Lives Initiative, has accepted a request by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to mobilize other African leaders in support of CARMMA at the summit.
