Maternal, Newborn & Child Health at the 120th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)
Sunday 5 April 2009| Addis Ababa- Dr Flavia Bustreo, Director a.i. of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health spoke during the 14th meeting of Women Parliamentarians at the IPU on Sunday 5th April, under the item "Parliaments leading the change on maternal, child and newborn health”.
Dr Bustreo briefly introduced the Partnership and the basic global facts of maternal, newborn & child health. She explained the work done with parliamentarians through the Countdown Initiative and presented updates on several initiatives which had taken place since the last IPU Assembly in Cape Town, South Africa, April 2008 .
Starting with the background of the work done in Cape Town in 2008, Dr Bustreo explained the launch of the Countdown Report and the special parallel session for Parliamentarians, emphasizing the role of parliamentarians in legislating for maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH). Finally, Dr Bustreo invited attendees to the Countdown and MNCH session that was to take place during the IPU Assembly on Tuesday 7 April 2009
