APRIL 2009 |CANBERRA/BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA - - An increased focus on maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in Asia and the Pacific is being planned by Partners and The Partnership. Country-specific investment cases and a regional Countdown to 2015 MNCH in Asia and the Pacific were discussed at a meeting coordinated by the University of Queensland. As part of the trip to Asia, Partnership Acting Director Dr Flavia Bustreo met with the Australian Parliament's Secretary for International Development Assistance - the Honourable Robert McMullan and AusAID's principle health adviser, Dr Jim Tulloch to discuss investing in maternal, newborn and child health.

31 March 2009 | Canberra - The Honourable Bob McMullan, Australian Parliament Secretary for International Development Assistance, together with AusAID's principle health advisor, Dr Jim Tulloch and colleague, Johanna Wicks, met with The Partnership Acting Director, Dr Flavia Bustreo Acting, and Health Economist, Henrik Axelson. The Hon. Mr McMullan is also a member of the High-Level Task Force for Innovative International Financing for Health Systems as well as Governor of the Board of the Asian Development Bank. The meeting provided an opportunity to brief Mr. McMullan on MNCH in general, the work of the PMNCH, the Countdown to 2015 Initiative and "Investing in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health - The Case for Asia and the Pacific".

Asian Countdown to 2015 on MNCH & country investment cases

2-3 APRIL 2009 | BRISBANE - An increased focus is being planned for maternal, newborn and child health is Asia and the Pacific. The University of Queensland hosted a meeting in Brisbane on 2-3 April 2009 to discuss and develop a project that will conduct regional country-specific investment cases and organize a regional Countdown to 2015 meeting .

The work is to be coordinated by the University of Queensland and implemented by a "Country Support Consortium", which includes Australian and national research institutions from the project's five focus countries: India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss how to coordinate the country-specific investment cases with the regional advocacy and technical work being conducted by a loosely coordinated MNCH Network for Asia and the Pacific - the Coogee Beach Group - as well as how to coordinate the regional Countdown meeting with the global Countdown meeting and report planned for the fourth quarter of 2010. The project is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Australian government, through its development agency- AusAID.

The Partnership was represented by the Director Acting Dr Flavia Bustreo and Technical officer, Henrik Axelson, who both gave presentations on investing in maternal, newborn and child health in Asia and the Pacific.
