The Partnership congratulates Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

9 JULY 2009 | ADDIS/GENEVA - The Partnership congratulates Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on his new position as Chair of the Geneva-based Global Fund and welcomes his continued commitment to maternal, newborn and child health. Dr Ghebreyesus is Minister of Health, Ethiopia and Co-Chair of The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH).

In a letter representing PMNCH, Partnership, Chair Joy Phumaphi and Vice-President, World Bank praised his dedication to global health: "It is my distinct honour to extend to you, on behalf of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, most sincere congratulations on your election as Chair of the Board of the Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria. The Global Fund - and the global health agenda more broadly - will benefit immeasurably from your wisdom, your keen insight and from the depth and breadth of experience you bring from your region and your country."

In his reply, Dr Ghebreyesus pointed to increased collaboration and increased synergies between major global health initiatives and agencies: "I believe we are at a pivotal juncture in the rapidly evolving field of global health…We must all work together to maximize synergies between the major global health initiatives and agencies, including PMNCH in ways that will continue to benefit countries working hard to expand access to health services, at the same time as building their health systems. I am grateful that I can continue to count on your support and partnership over the coming years and very much look forward to the many collaborative opportunities ahead of us. "
