Mission statement
Investigators at the Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI) engage in various projects - from molecular and cell biology to health services and policy research - that involve collaborations with maternity, newborn, and child health partners in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Asia, South America, and regions in the South Pacific.
CFRI’s main areas of research are reproductive health, innovations in health care and technology, child immunology, childhood cancer and blood, children’s nutrition, childhood diabetes, developmental neuroscience, and genetics. Projects range from developing community interventions for women with pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, management of pediatric infectious diseases in the Cape Flats, vaccinology, and cell phone-based technologies to support community-level case findings and interventions.
