Overview
As the world marks World Health Day on 7 April Action for Global Health’s new report warns that European governments are preparing to use the economic crisis as an excuse to abandon their commitments to health in developing countries. ‘Health in Crisis’ argues that the global economic crisis means that they must show the same determination for urgent action on health as they have in protecting their banking systems.
The first section introduces the overarching theme and context to the report. The second section looks at aid effectiveness for health, examining the commitments made at the 2008 Third High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness (Accra) and the follow-up by the EU and Member States. The third section carries out a similar analysis for aid financing for health, examining the 2008 United Nations High-Level Event on the MDGs (New York) and the Financing for Development Conference (Doha). Section Four provides a summary of Action for Global Health’s key conclusions. Section Five presents recommendations for action by EU and Member State decision-makers.
