This article presents the factors that inspired a group of nurses and midwives to establish the first privatly run maternity care centre in Nepal, a 15-bedded free-standing birthing centre in Kathmandu, in July 2007. The author and founder manager of APS Kendra, Laxmi Tamang, is also the country contact for the International Alliance of Midwives.
