International symposia
A number of regional or subregional meetings are organized by WHO directly or with WHO as co-organizer or sponsor.
This is the case for the series of International Conferences on Rabies in Asia. The first such conference was co-organized by the Merieux Foundation and WHO in 1989 in Samarkhand, Uzbekistan. It was followed at two to three year intervals by conferences in Indonesia (Jakarta, 1993), China (Wuhan, 1996) and Viet Nam (Hanoi, 2001). The Vth international symposium is scheduled to be held in Bangkok in 2005. Reports are available from the Merieux Fondation, 17 rue Bourgelat, 69002 Lyon, France.
In Africa a group of independent scientists and public health officers created SEARG (Southern and Eastern African Rabies Group) in Lusaka, Zambia in 1992. After the very successful 1993 conference organized in South Africa (Petermarizburg and Pretoria) the group organized biennial or triennial conferences with WHO as the major sponsor (in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1995, in Kenya in 1998, in Malawi in 2001, and in Swaziland in 2003. The next conference should take place in Namibia in 2005. Reports edited by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Management in Zoonoses Control, Malzeville, France, published by Edition Fondation Marcel Méreiux, are available from the Merieux Fondation. In Europe, coordination meetings for wildlife rabies control were organized in collaboration with the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Management in Zoonoses Control, Malzeville, France with the co-sponsorship of WHO and the Merieux Foundation. The first meeting was held in Strasbourg, France in 1985, the second in Annecy, France in 1988, the third in Nancy, France in 1991. The fourth was held in Piestany in Slovakia in 1993 (reports are available from the Merieux Fondation). This series of Pan-European conferences stopped in 1993. It was replaced with two series of annual meetings: one involving Eastern European countries organized by two WHO Collaborating Centres on Rabies located in Germany (Tübingen and Wüsterhausen), and the other involving Western European countries organized by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Management in Zoonoses Control, Malzeville, France. The organization of a new Pan-European Conference on Rabies in Europe is under discussion.
Conferences on rabies in the Americas are held every year on the American continent following a 3-year rhythm for the location: one year în Canada, the following in Mexico or a Latin American country and the third year in the USA. The last conference was held in Philadelphia in October 2003.
