WHO supports the prequalification of reproductive health essential medicines

WHO has had a scheme for the prequalification of essential medicines for Malaria, Tuberculosis and HIV since 2000. In 2004 it was agreed to initiate the inclusion of 12 reproductive health essential medicines into the prequalification scheme.

WHO/UNFPA have established a prequalification scheme for male latex condoms and TCu380A Intrauterine Devices (IUD). This scheme has been developed in collaboration with the manufacturing community, international agencies, the donor community, bulk procurement agencies and experts. The scheme has been harmonized with the WHO Prequalification Scheme for Essential Medicines and is being implemented by UNFPA.
