Launch event

The main launch event will take place on 11 May 2011 at the Presidential Palace, in the presence of the President of the Republic, who will announce the strategic guidelines for road safety actions in Cyprus for the next decade. An extensive coverage of the event by the media is expected. The Minister of Communications and Works and Chairperson of the Road Safety Council, as well as other Government ministers involved in Road Safety, will participate in the launch event. All the Government Authorities which comprise the Road Safety Council, and also all the Cypriot Signatories of the European Road Safety Charter, will be represented at the launch event. A number of Cypriot organisations and Local authorities ( possibly 30) will sign the European Road Safety Charter at the main launch event.

A giant banner with the Decade tag and the slogan "Together we can save millions of lives" will be suspended on the outer wall of the Presidential Palace, during the launch event. Similar banners will be placed on the buildings of the House of Parliament, the Ministry of Communications and Works and the Ministry of Justice and Public Order. A youth band will perform during the main launch event, a song written for a young man killed at the age of 17 by a drunk driver on the dawn of 2007 New Year's Day. A booklet with the actions of the Cypriot European Road Safety signatories will be published and distributed to the participants of the main launch event and the media.

A message by the Minister of Education and Culture for Road Safety and the Decade, will be read on 11 May in all schools. The draft of the new Cyprus Highway Code will be placed on the web for public consultation, on 11 May 2011. On a date close to 11 May 2011, an award ceremony for the 3rd Journalist Road Safety Competition will be held. The awards will be presented by the Minister of Communications and Works and Chairperson of the Road Safety Council, the Minister of Justice and Public Order and the Chief of Police. On a date close to 11 May 2011, an award ceremony for the 12th Students' Road Safety Essay Competition will be held. The awards will be presented by the Minister of Communications and Works and Chairperson of the Road Safety Council, the Minister of Education and Culture and the Chief of Police. On a date close to 11 May 2011, an award ceremony for the 1st Composite Road Safety Competition for the Youth will be held. The awards will be presented by the Minister of Communications and Works and Chairperson of the Road Safety Council, the Minister of Justice and Public Order and the Chief of Police. Decade tag badges will be given to all the participants of the main launch event and the other events described above. 3.000 decade posters with the tag and the slogan "Together we can save millions of lives" will be posted at public buildings. All the organisations and local authorities which have signed the European Road Safety Charter, have been encouraged to organise their own activities for the launch of the Decade.
