9th meeting of the UN Road Safety Collaboration
On 17-18 November 2008, the 9th meeting of the UN Road Safety Collaboration was hosted by WHO at its headquarters in Geneva. The meeting was attended by over 80 participants. During previous meetings of the Collaboration, the operating framework had been a standing topic on the agenda. However, this discussion was put to an end with the adoption of the Terms of Reference for the Collaboration.
During the meeting participants were updated on different activities carried out since the last meeting: progress on the Global Road Safety Facility, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Europe's (UNECE) legal instruments, development of the Global status report on road safety, the Make Roads Safe campaign, the European Union's regional road safety programme, the International Organization for Standardization's work on road safety management systems; celebration of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims; implementation of global good practice; and setting of regional and national road safety targets.
In addition, presentations on road safety work in the city of Sao Jose dos Campos in Brazil and in Ethiopia were also given. The smaller project groups initiated by the Collaboration; development and implementation of the "how to" manuals, fleet safety and infrastructure also reported substantial progress.
One major topic on the agenda was a discussion on the preparation for the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in 2009 hosted by the Russian Federation.
The last half day was devoted to a joint session hosted by the UNECE's Working Party on Road Traffic Safety (WP1).
